Making sounds audible is not enough

Hearing devices help people by allowing them to hear more and understand better.

Understanding is enhanced in a number of ways. First of all, soft sounds are made more audible and loud sounds are made more comfortable, as compression helps the user perceive loudness changes more naturally.

This means the user can focus attention on decoding the meaning of the sounds that are heard, instead of being surprised or annoyed by their volume.

More speech and spatial cues

Hearing devices help organise a sound environment by providing more speech and spatial cues, due to increased audibility. When the listener obtains a better mental map of the situation, focusing attention on sound sources of interest and suppressing unimportant sources becomes more straightforward. This in turn facilitates enhancement of a target sound as it allows the listener to better separate it from disturbing sound sources.

Improving signal-to-noise ratio

In effortful listening environments, understanding is challenging and the user cannot organise and select desired sound sources. Directional microphones in hearing aids can provide help by improving the signal-to-noise ratio, which helps the user focus on and understand a person talking in front of them. Noise management systems help decrease the annoyance of disturbing background sounds and reduce the listening effort associated with demanding listening conditions.
