Questions about IFTTT & the Oticon ON app
Do I need to use the Oticon ON app?
The ON app provides discreet remote control access to your Oticon Opn™ hearing instruments and is also needed to create the connection to IFTTT. However, the Opn™ hearing aids do not need to be used with either IFTTT or the ON app.
What can I use the ON app for?
The ON app lets you adjust the volume, listening programming, and streaming source for your hearing aids directly from your mobile device. It also has a "find my hearing aids" feature to help locate lost instruments and contains use and care information about the hearing aids.
What is IFTTT?
IFTTT stands for "If This Then That". It is a third-party service that automates how your hearing aids, home devices, apps, and websites work with each other through rules (or "recipes") that you create.
Do I need to register with Oticon to use IFTTT?
Yes. In order for your hearing aids and your ON app to connect you to IFTTT, you need to create an Oticon IFTTT channel.
Why did you make the Oticon IFTTT channel?
We believe that the "Internet of things," the integration of product and services, will have great value for many people in the future. For us it is natural to provide our premium hearing care solutions with access to this technology so that users may begin to explore the possibilities of using their hearing solutions in more connected ways.
Do I need to register with IFTTT?
Yes. You need to have an IFTTT account - and an Oticon IFTTT channel - to get started.
How do I set up an Oticon IFTTT channel?
Once you have installed the Oticon ON app, select the IF section and select "get started." You will then be guided to creating your Oticon IFTTT channel.
How do I create a recipe on IFTTT?
IFTTT is very straightforward. You log into IFTTT (www.ifttt.com), and select create recipe. We invite you to view sample guides we have created for inspiration.
Which "triggers" do you support? (A condition that can "trigger" a communication.)
Currently we support the following triggers: battery low, program change, connection established, connection lost, volume, program change, mute.
Which "actions" do you support? (Something you can program to occur when a triggering event occurs.)
Currently we support the following actions: set a program, increase volume, decrease volume, and "play text to speech" ("play text to speech" is only available with the iOS app).
Will you add more triggers and actions?
Yes. Additional triggers and actions may be added based on further developments and usage patterns.
Which other (3rd party) devices/services can I use with Oticon Opn™?
The list is always expanding. You can see an overview of all channels on IFTTT by visiting www.ifttt.com.
Do I need to use this feature of Oticon Opn™?
No. You will receive premium performance from your Oticon Opn™ hearing aids regardless of if you use the ON app/IFTTT. Connection to IFTTT is provided as an optional feature that some may find useful.
How long does it take to get started with IFTTT?
Using IFTTT is relatively straightforward. If you are accustomed to using the internet, many users will be able to set up an IFTTT account and even set up a test "recipe" in less than an hour. The first thing to do is visit www.ifttt.com and set up an account.
Will this drain my Hearing Aid batteries?
No. The information used in the Oticon channel is already available in the App, so it requires no additional power from the hearing aids to use IFTTT.
Can I stop using IFTTT if I choose?
Yes. In the ON app you can turn of IFTTT (and back on again). Or from IFTTT you can delete your connection to the ON app (and with that stop the channel).
Can others see my recipes?
No. Your IFTTT account is personal.
What if it doesn't work?
Oticon cannot guarantee performance in any given situation since there are many components to successful usage of IFTTT services, such as your Internet connections, how a recipe is set up, the services provided by other devices, etc.
How reliable is it?
IFTTT is as reliable as other internet services. Please note that Oticon cannot guarantee service. IFTTT should be used for convenience and entertainment purposes.
Which hearing aids can I use with IFTTT?
Currently the only hearing aids on the market which can be used with IFTTT are Oticon Opn™ devices.
Is there a limit to what I can do?
Yes and no. There is a limit based on the actions and triggers available in the Oticon channel. But, there is almost no limit to the number of combinations of services and recipes you can create.
What if my spouse/caregiver/loved one/etc. and I both use hearing aids?
Your hearing aids and your Oticon IFTTT channel are personal. However, you can create recipes where you can integrate and share services.
Questions about Privacy, Security, Compatibility, and Cost
Is there a cost?
No. Aside from the cost of your Internet Connection, there is no cost associated with the Oticon IFTTT channel. There is no cost/fee for using the IFTTT service.
Is it safe?
Yes. You decide what happens to your hearing solution and how it interacts with other devices via IFTTT. It is your personal system with your personal channel.
Can other people control my hearing aid?
Not directly. But if you set up a "recipe" where your hearing aid will be affected by other events - such as turning on the TV or the ring of a doorbell - that will control you hearing aid.
Does this work on Android and iOS?
All actions and triggers work on both platforms, except the action to read out text. This is for now only available on iOS.
Can others hack into my hearing aids?
The system is as safe as your logon information. We cannot provide any guarantees beyond our Oticon Channel and kindly refer you to also consult IFTTT and the other services you may use for additional information.
What if my hearing aids need replacing?
Once (re-)paired with your phone, ON App ensures that you can continue to use IFTTT.
What if I get new hearing aids?
Other Oticon Opn™ hearing aids would also be able to connect with IFTTT and the ON app. No other hearing aids work with IFTTT.
What kind of personal data do you store?
We do not store any kind of personal data. The only data which is used with regards to IFTTT is the triggers and actions you can see in your IFTTT account. Please see our privacy statement for more information.
